Common problems with air conditioning – and how to avoid them!
Air conditioning, working away quietly in the background, we hardly even notice it. That is until something goes wrong. Like all complex systems there can be many different reasons your air conditioning goes wrong – many are avoidable with good maintenance. Although you can fix some of the simpler ones yourself we would always recommend that you call in the experts, like 4 Seasons Air Conditioning, to deal with more complex problems.
Here we look at some of the most common faults that can crop up with your air conditioning and what you need to do.
1. Blowing warm air
One of the most common calls we get is from customers whose air conditioning is blowing warm air when it should be cooling. The first thing to do is don’t panic! There are several reasons why this may be happening, and some can be easily fixed.
Check the thermostat
It may sound obvious but often the reason air conditioning isn’t cooling is that the thermostat isn’t set correctly. It might be set too high or someone may have adjusted it without you noticing. A quick check of the thermostat can often fix the problem.
Dirty Filters?
Like anything, air conditioning needs regular maintenance to keep it working at its best. Filters and coils in the units can easily become clogged with dirt and dust over time, reducing the amount of air that can flow through the system. This affects the efficiency and reduces its ability to cool the air.
Replacing these components once they’ve gone wrong can be expensive. That’s why we always recommend that you have your system serviced regularly by an engineer to keep it working efficiently. Minor issues can then be addressed before they become big, expensive problems.
At 4 Seasons Air Conditioning we offer maintenance contracts to suit your needs, giving you peace of mind that your air conditioning is working as it should. Call our friendly team on 0330 400 5471 or email enquiries@4sac.co.uk to find out more.
Leaking refrigerant
Most air conditioning systems use a refrigerant to cool the air. If your unit is running low on refrigerant, then it’s possible that you have a leak. If so, it isn’t as simple as adding more refrigerant as this will only leak out again. It’s important that you get the problem fixed as soon as possible by a qualified engineer. They will be able to pinpoint any leaks, fix the problem and refill the system with refrigerant.
2. Air condenser has stopped running
One of the reasons your air conditioning has stopped running could be that there is no power. The first thing to check is whether the power has tripped, so check to make sure a fuse hasn’t blown. If this isn’t the reason then it’s time to call an engineer, as electrical faults within the unit need to be professionally and safely repaired.
3. Air conditioning is leaking water
This is another common call out for our engineers. There can be several causes for water leaking from the unit. Some simple ones you can fix yourself, but more complex ones require a professional air conditioning engineer. If in doubt always call in the experts – this way you stay safe and get a professional job done.
Reasons for your air conditioning to be leaking water could include.
- If the drain hole in your unit is blocked by dirt the water can overflow and cause a leak. Simply clearing any blockages can resolve this
- One of the components, such as the pump or condenser could be blocked or broken, causing the unit to leak. This will need to be identified and fixed by an engineer
- If you don’t find an obvious reason for the leak it could be a more technical problem and time to call in the experts.
4. Air conditioning unit constantly shutting on and off
This is a common problem and is called ‘short cycling’. It can be expensive to repair if wrongly diagnosed so it’s important to get a professional engineer in to quickly identify the issue and avoid replacing components unnecessarily.
5. Air conditioning unit making strange noises
If your air conditioning is making a strange noise this is often a sign of a serious problem with the unit. The first thing to do is to switch it off. There are a few possible reasons why this is happening, but it is best dealt with by a professional engineer.
Many of these problems are preventable with regular maintenance. At 4 Seasons Air Conditioning we offer experienced, professional service at affordable prices.
